There are four main muscles in the shoulder – the Infraspinatus, Latissimus dorsi, Subscapularis, and Rotator cuff. Each muscle is responsible for different parts of the shoulder. It is possible to hurt any one of these muscles.


Trapezius injuries are common and are often the result of overuse. However, they can also occur because of an acute injury, such as during contact sports or lifting a heavy bag. Therefore, it is important to recognize the symptoms of this injury and get appropriate treatment. These injuries can be very painful and may lead to further complications.

The muscles of the trapezius are located on the dorsal surface of the upper arm. These muscles are divided into three heads, one coming from the coracoid, another from the scapula, and the last one from the humerus. The two main functions of the trapezius are to rotate the scapula and stabilize the shoulder blade.

Latissimus dorsi

The Latissimus dorsus is a group of muscles located in the shoulder. These muscles possess moderate force-generating capacity and have a wide range of motion. The muscle has a large excursion potential, but is used primarily for lateral flexion and extension. The muscle is characterized by a moderate PCSA and a large normalized fascicle length.

Injuries to the latissimus dorsi are fairly rare, but they can cause a lot of pain. In the majority of cases, the pain goes away on its own, but if the pain persists, it is a sign that you need medical attention. In the case of a tear, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin, may help ease the pain. A physician may also recommend a different treatment method if the pain is severe.


Subscapularis muscle tendinitis is a common condition that affects the shoulder and can result in chronic pain. It often occurs in active individuals who are constantly using their shoulders. The shoulder joint is a complex structure that allows for large volume movements. The humerus (upper arm) is immersed in the glenoid cavity in the scapula, and several tendons and ligaments attach to each other to stabilize and support the joint.

There are three trigger points in the subscapularis muscle. Two are located near the outer edges of the muscle, and the third is found inside. The pain from these trigger points usually concentrates in the posterior part of the shoulder, but it may also spill over into the shoulder blade and the back of the upper arm. In addition to shoulder pain, the subscapularis muscle can cause pain in the wrist.

Rotator cuff

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles that surround the shoulder joint. Injuries to these muscles can lead to deformities, weakness, and difficulty moving the arm. The treatment for rotator cuff tears varies. Physical therapy, rest, and surgery are all possible options.

Physiotherapy is an essential part of the treatment for rotator cuff injuries. This group of muscles is comprised of four muscle-tendon units. Injuries to the rotator cuff do not usually cause huge tears. In fact, they usually measure just one to three centimeters across.


The Deltoid muscle is the largest muscle in the shoulder. It covers the glenohumeral joint and gives the shoulder its round shape. It extends from the clavicle in front to the scapula in back. The muscle originates from three separate origins: the lateral end of the clavicle, the acromion, and the spine of the scapula. Each origin produces a different band of muscle fibers. The muscle then merges at the insertion site on the deltoid tuberosity of the humerus.

The treatment of mild deltoid injuries may be self-limiting and consists of adjusting your exercise routine to reduce swelling and pain. Athletes may need to decrease the intensity of their workouts or decrease the duration of their sports practices. They may also need to take over-the-counter pain medications to reduce inflammation. In severe cases, treatment may involve immobilization. The patient’s pain tolerance and recovery time should determine the treatment plan.
